The Six HSE Management Standards

The HSE Management Standards identify six key areas of work that can contribute to work-related stress. This short video explains each standard and how employers can use them when assessing workplace stress risks.

What are the six standards?

The HSE Management Standards describe six areas of work that, when poorly managed, can contribute to work-related stress.

Demands covers issues such as workload, work patterns and the working environment. Control looks at how much influence employees have over the way they work. Support considers the help, resources and encouragement available from managers and colleagues.

Relationships includes issues such as conflict, unacceptable behaviour and how people are treated at work. Role considers whether employees understand their responsibilities and whether conflicting expectations exist. Change looks at how organisational change is planned, managed and communicated.

The standards are not a risk assessment by themselves. They provide a recognised framework that employers can use to help identify potential sources of work-related stress and consider where action may be needed.
